10 – Tips to inspire an original Christmas campaign

#12TipsforChristmasCampaigns

With so many Christmas ads flooding our social channels, it is hard to be creative and meaningful as well as remembering to target the audience that will want to buy your product or service.

So, in order to be original and memorable, you may need to think outside of the box.

Take the lidl ad in 2020 for example.

Their main goal was to reference (or tease) their competitors, which gave them the ability to create a campaign that was both humorous and memorable. It cleverly tells the audience that they offer the same product, but better value than their competitors.

If you don’t remember it, here’s a little reminder:

Clearly this still had a relatively big budget but one take away could be the use of poems or a carol, which is a great way to get a message across in a warm and friendly manner.

Another way to get a message across is through narrating a story. In the case of the 2015 Sainsburys ad they did this with the loveable, well known character, Mog. With over 41 million views it can definitely be considered a successful campaign for them!

This may be big budget in terms of production, but what’s clever here is the way that they bring in humour as well as heart-warming support of friends, family and neighbours.

From this ad we can take away the principles of how they used a strong narrative to get the message they wanted across.

If you want confirmation that you don’t need a huge budget to create a great Christmas ad, then look no further than Hafod Hardware Christmas Advert 2019. If you check our their YouTube channel they put one out every year, so look out for this years, which I am sure will be coming very soon!

On a more realistic budget, in 2020 we were involved in working with Cambridge County Council and Amey to promote the message of reducing food waste at Christmas.

Using the 12 days of Christmas theme we created ‘Don’t be crackers reuse your food’.

Each day revealed ways in which to use up your leftovers.

The voiceover was using children’s voices, making it more relatable, and authentic. Click the image below to view all 12 days.

Hopefully from these 3 examples you can see how you can take different approaches, regardless of your budget.

To help you get some inspiration for your own campaign we’ve jotted down a list of Christmas themes that may help.
