Looking at each step in a little more detail…

Identify your Target Audience

We are assuming that most of you reading this article are marketers, so you will probably have a good understanding of this. However, if you are new to marketing, or you are a small business start-up, then here’s a list of those demographics that you need to understand in order to identify your target audience.

  • Age
  • Location
  • Gender
  • Income level
  • Education level
  • Marital or family status
  • Occupation
  • Ethnic background

Then add psychographics to further define your audience:

  • Personality
  • Attitudes
  • Values
  • Interests/hobbies
  • Lifestyles
  • Behaviour

If you’re not sure how to identify the demographics of your audience, then here’s some ideas to source this information.

  • Use your existing database – if you hold any info like location, gender and age, then analyse and summarise this.
  • Reach out on social and ask questions to glean more psychographics behaviour of your potential audience.
  • Look at your competition, who are they targeting, does it have an obvious age range or profile?

Set Goals and Objectives

Once you have your target audience defined you can start creating your campaign strategy by defining your goals and objectives.

For example, this might be to generate 100 new users to your website. What these goals and objectives are will depend on your product or service.

Write these down in a word document as part of your campaign plan.

Generate Marketing Campaign Ideas

If you have the above two points defined then you are in a great position to have initial conversations with your marketing or creative agency to work out how you are going to create content that will appeal to your audience.

If you haven’t decided on an agency yet, give a two or three a call to see how they respond to your campaign goals. A quick chat can really help decide who you go with and how you will work together.

Select Your Marketing Channels

Your plans for the creative, along with your audience analysis, will naturally shape and define the marketing channels to use.

Detail these in a document and define what formats you will need for each channel.

Develop an Offer

At this point, if you are running an offer, now is the time to define this, before you start work on the final creative.

Estimate Campaign Metrics

Finally, it’s a good idea to estimate your campaign metrics. This will give you ROI measures that will allow you to respond quickly to the elements of the campaign that either work or don’t.
